World Nursery Rhyme Week

Nursery rhymes play an important role in early childhood development and education.
As well as being fun they are excellent teaching tools:

Nursery rhymes and children’s songs boost vocabulary and language development

They help children to develop literacy skills

They provide a fun way to support early numeracy skills

Nursery rhymes help children to develop social, physical and emotional skills.

We chose a different rhyme each day and offered supporting activities for each rhyme.

Singing Row, row, row your boat children found a friend and carried out the actions. They also ‘sailed’ boats in a massive puddle.

Whilst singing Hickory Dickory Dock the children moved the mouse up the clock. They also made mice out of playdough and buttons, and tasted different flavoured cheese.

Hiding stars around the room the children sang Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

The children used guttering at the allotments for ‘Incy Wincy Spider’ to climb up, and acted out Humpty Dumpty. As it was a sunny day we spent a little bit longer at the allotments, and treated ourselves to hot chocolate and biscuits!
